Lemongrass Steam Bath
by hải & Lê Thị Ngọc Huyền
Ingredients
lemongrass
citrus, flowers, bay leaves, ginger and/or other aromatics
Process
Boil water a pot of water. Bring the pot to a heat-safe spot on the floor and ddd your ingredients. Remove clothes and hold your head over the pot. Tent yourself and the pot with thick blankets or towels. Stay as long as you can handle. Wipe down your body and rest.
Xông hơi sả is a lemongrass steam bath: lemongrass, herbs, essential oils in boiled water. Feel free to add citrus peel, flowers, bay leaves, and other local floral, fauna.
When I was sick growing up, it was my mom’s “last resort” in case rest, food, etc. weren’t enough to rid illness. When hot (water/steam) meets heat in the body (inflammation, fever, sickness), it ignites sweat so that toxins and illness are released from the body.
My mom would boil a pot of water, put it on the ground, add lemongrass, ginger, green oil, or whatever herbs and medicine would be around into the pot.
With clothes off, I’d put my face over the pot. She’d cover my body with a thick blanket or a bunch of towels, and I’d sweat out my sickness for as long as I could stay under.
I’d wipe the sweat off my body and go right to sleep. no shower. And 100% of the time I’d feel better the next day :)
Deep Breathing
by Sita & Ranga Lal Bhaumik
Ranga Lal Bhaumik: “Mama Sita, I remember after you left: Your grandma and grandpa used to meditate with deep breathing. Also when I was in recovering I had to do breathing exercises with a tool and suppose to continue twice a day. As I getup and at bed time. I was doing until started working. Your mom used to joined me.”
Turmeric Paste, Fresh Air, Tiger Balm, Tea
by Salima & Yasmin Hamirani
My mom would make me eat tumeric paste-tumeric & honey. I hated it! And then steam. And lots of sleep. Also no intense exercise (she told me that could push the infection deeper into the lungs - she was a nurse) but lots of slow gentle walks outside in fresh air as long as it’s not too cold. Oh and tiger balm. And ginger lemongrass tea with a little black pepper.
