To The Kitchen: A People's Remedies Stand

  • ALENA 2725 Magnolia Street Oakland, CA, 94607 United States (map)

Join People's Kitchen Collective on Sat. August 19th for "To The Kitchen: A People's Remedies Stand" on the corner of 28th and Magnolia st. outside of ALENA in West Oakland.

Over the past two years, PKC has collected Kitchen Remedies from thousands of people from around the world. Asking each person what their parents, elders or caretakers fed them to make them feel better when they were a child, we received remedies for everything from stomach aches to white supremacy. We first exhibited this project at the Smithsonian museum and are excited to bring it home to Oakland.

At our People's Remedy stand, you will be able to read hundreds of home remedies and we invite you to add your own remedy to this community collection. This PKC event is about exploring ancestral kitchen wisdom while sharing tangible skills and remedies to heal, fortify and survive.

These remedies, passed down from generation to generation, are inherently political. The relationship of micro-aggressions with PTSD in communities of color is well documented. Our recipes for survival are not. In the face of rampant racism and gentrification, there is a distinct and urgent need to lift up our own remedies for healing.

We hope you will join us on Saturday, August 19th from 3pm to 6pm for this free/donation-based sidewalk exhibit and tasting ♥
