To the STREETS!
“STREETS!” (May 20th, 2018) was a meal held in celebration of the history and resilience of the West Oakland neighborhood. This meal for 500 participants spanning a city block was a reclamation of the commons, of the streets that are rapidly being disconnected from their history through gentrification. Here, we met at the intersection of Yuri Kochiyama and Malcolm X's birthdays, and at 28th St. and Magnolia St., the site of Lil Bobby Hutton's murder by the Police 50 years ago. We couldn't have pulled off this event without our many contributors who gave a total of $32,430 to STREETS!
